Jelliff? Need help identifying . . .
« on: June 03, 2011, 04:52:21 PM »

Trying to identify this furniture . . . I have two couches and two chairs (pictured).  The couches have pineapple finials along the back and the same woman's head carving on the arms.  Upholstery is original - any help greatly appreciated - thanks.

This may be another case of carved heads= must be Jelliff.

The Jelliff company was in business until the 1890's, but the only examples of their work that are certain are from the 1850-1870-ish period.  Therefore I don't think it's possible to say with certainty that your suite is NOT by Jelliff, and possibly of later date than the known examples.  However apart from the heads, which were a feature deployed by many manufacturers beside Jelliff, I don't see anything in your photograph that says Jelliff is your man.

This chair reminds me of some I have seen attributed to Herter Bros., particularly the rounded shoulders.

Examples of Herter Bros.-attributed chairs which remind me more of your chair than any Jelliff I have seen- note one with heads on armrests:
