1877 FIRE - Roux, PJ Hardy, Huntzinger, "Herts Brothers", etc.

The link below is to a NY Times article from October 18, 1877.  You will have to click on an additional link via the site below in order to see the complete article as a PDF.  It is hard to imagine how much furniture must have gone up in this fire, but the article is fairly specific about how much inventory ($) was destroyed.  The article has some descriptions of the shops as well.

I suspect that more can be learned on the NY Times site.  They have done a nice job of making their archives available within the last year.

I particularly like the reference to "Huntzinger" with a "t" and the fact that Hardy owned the building that Hunzinger was in.  There is a resemblance between their work - see the Hardy chair here.

Another article I ran into while looking for more on Hardy is this: one.  It talks of a worker's strike and names many famous makers impacted: Pottier & Stymus, Herter, (Hardy), Roux, Kilian, Schrenkeisen, "Kemble and Cabers" (I assume was Kimbel and Cabus), Marcotte.  Interesting reading these old accounts.
