Tin Ceilings
« on: June 01, 2009, 09:53:45 PM »

Well, technically not tin but stamped metal ceilings, cornices and other decorative metal accents were a late Victorian innovation. The W.F. Norman company made many wonderful designs and they are still making them the old way. Even if you are not planning on installing a metal ceiling the reprint of their 1909 catalog belongs in everyones library, it's only $3 and its thick and beautifully reproduced. These ceilings not only hid damaged plaster but also provided a great fire block. Think about how long the heat from a gas chandelier would take to burn through metal!

Their website doesn't do their products justice at all. Their stamped ceiling & stamped ornament catalogs are both great - even as a design resource if you don't plan to install one. The catalogs probably haven't changed in 100 years. I own & highly recommend both.   woodwright
