Cabinet confusion
« on: October 16, 2012, 08:00:06 AM »

Hello, bought this cabinet and a bit confused as to what it actually is.. an etagere, buffet, parlor cabinet? Looked through the few books I have and have come up with nothing, same as on-line. Heck, I really don't even know if it is Victorian, or Edwardian. The juxtaposition of the heavily carved side doors, carved back, 7 claw feet, shell trim up top and  Moorish supports with the brass gallery and spindly legs is a bit odd. I bought this on eBay, you know where EVERY THING is rare or made by a great cabinet maker,,,  Undecided , thinking that it was the top to a sideboard, but it clearly is/was not. Its solid walnut and very well made. Anyone seen anything like it in a book you have or came across one?  Come on, tell me it belonged to Queen Victoria herself.. (grin).
Oh and I still have to clean it up, finish seems to be good,, just DIRTY.....

Rixter:

I think Victoria had passed on when this was made, though she was somewhat of a recent memory. I think one of your guesses was right: I'd call this Edwardian, ca. 1905-1915, and probably made in western Europe.

I believe this is the top of a buffet, repurprosed as a cabinet. I've seen designs like this starting in the art nouveau era and extending forward, though they've usually got the lower "server" section as well. Cheesy

Unfortunately, I imagine that the bottom portion of this is long gone, so you might as well place it on a mantle or large table and use it as a cabinet. The woodwork is quite nice, after all!

Thanks for your input Kevin, I liked the wood work as well. What makes you think Western Europe? What ever is was, I will just place it in a hallway. Its large enough in size to work well by itself.

Most of the similar examples I've seen came from France, though Belgium and England are likely candidates as well. In the absence of a tag or signature, it's impossible to say for certain.
