My wife and I recently acquired a really nice lockside, probably the best we've seen in 25 years of collecting. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j285/zekenstein/Lockside1.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j285/zekenstein/Lockside2.jpg The depth and style of the incised…

The depth and style of the incised decoration in the burl and other design elements of the piece suggest Allen and Brother to me. It's an extremely well made chest and it absolutely "glows" in our bedroom.

Any thoughts on it are greatly appreciated.

We're new, Helen and I, to this forum and I would love to share info on all and any Victorian American furniture. Knowledge is a precious thing and the more we give away the more we own.

Zeke,

Welcome to the forum. We're glad to have another avid collector in our midst. I'll take a closer look at the photos as time permits and see if anything strikes me about your chest, which is gorgeous.

I've attached lightened versions of your photos to this message so that people can see the detail better.

Hey John,

Thank you very much for the welcome. I love this stuff and I would love to see this forum become very active by collectors in all price ranges. This furniture is so much a part of our heritage and we can learn so much from each other. I can so much appreciate a walnut balloon back all the way up to a herter neo-grec cabinet. Us collectors should stick together here and share our thoughts.

I'm very happy to be a member here :)

I think it is beautiful. :)

This related chest has a different drawer configuration, but was surely from the same shop.
Why thank you misslilybart :)

Both for liking my piece of furniture and for the link. Yes, the one John sold is almost identical except for the drawer configuration. I'm guessing this one from Fontaines had no desk in it as John would have surely pointed it out in his description. The desk itself is wonderful and lined with a purple cloth which also lines the 2 drawers in the desk. I will not use the desk for fear of destroying the original cloth which is fairly intact considering the age of the chest. Speaking of drawers, out of the five left after the one that holds the desk, my wife, Helen, monopolized four of them so I have one drawer to keep my socks and underwear in. Ah but what a nice place to keep them in! ;D

A very unusual coincidence happened to me today, I stopped in an antique shop in Red bank, NJ, just by chance and they had yet another one of these chests! It's much lighter in color and may have been refinished once?

After all these years I have seen 2 in the same week, what a coincidence, gothic locksides must be coming out of the woodwork!
