Can anyone help me identify this lovely piece of Victorian furniture. What I can tell you is that it is made of Honduran Mahogany, with beveled diamond dust mirrors, and it appears to be all hand carved with immpecable precision. The carving is certainly three-dimensional in the manner of either New York or Philadelphia's best carvers such as Herter Brothers, Allen, Pabst. Frankly, the overall design is Classical Revival (Renaissance) and it lacks the shallow carving done by Pabst or perhaps Allen Brothers, although the piece is said to have come from Philadelphia. The other unusual quality is the divided upholstered seat and the lack of an umbrella stand. This piece was designed for dressing and perhaps for hats only. I suspect either for a grand residence or in a very upscale hotel. I have attached a few pictures to provide some idea of the scale of the piece (about 8' high x 5' wide) and the exquisite detail in the carving (lions with wings and masks).
