Might anybody be available to provide a condition report for the bookcase that is lot #287? There are some other pretties here too, like the bed at lot #123. http://www.jenack.com/viewauction.aspx?a=221 Please note that they are also listing on ebay live:…

Please note that they are also listing on ebay live:  http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/jenackauctions_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ
(note - add 1,000 to the lot numbers if using ebay; the afore-mentioned bookcase, for example, would be lot 1287)

Thank you,

Jason
jason, why not just email/call auction house for a condition report?
You know...I finally figured out to do just that late last week.  I put in a bid and watched the item go live (I happened to be online & check just as it was going on the block).  I am either the high bidder or the under bidder on that bookcase.  This is to say that it sold for my high bid.  I just don't know if I had the last bid or if my bid was out-of-phase (such that the other person bid an amount equal to my high bid).  I'll let you know once I find out!

jason, yeah, i know how that feels, i was recently the underbidder on 2 items i really wanted. Some auction houses have a plus 1 or plus 2 feature where if there is a tie bid on an object  the house will automatically bid 1 or 2 more increments over your base bid  so you dont end up as the underbidder in case of a tie.
Looks like I was the under-bidder.  I noticed that Jenack Auction has that one-plus option, but I figured that this was more or less the same as me upping my bid by one increment...which I did.  Given the shipping costs, taxes, and premiums, I am fine with not having won the bookcase.  If the item had been somewhat local, I would have gone nearly another $1,000 or so.  Somebody got a pretty good deal on thatbookcase at $2,100...it would have been an even better deal had I not bid.

I was also under-bidder on a recent Cowan's auction item.  It was a simple framed autograph, letter, & picture...would have been a gift for an in-law had I won.  Oh well.

That auction was about 3 hrs. from me (a bit of a drive, but doable), but I've never been to one of their auctions. Looks like they had some nice items - I'll have to keep an eye on them for future auctions.

1881/ Jason - if you're looking for a bookcase (or anything else that's large/ expensive to ship) it's always nice to buy close to you (obviously - you don't need me to tell you that). Here's my advice (for what it's worth). Eventually everything turns up on ebay. Ebay also has a feature that lists auctions by distance away from you so you can only look at items close to you if you choose (which is great for large & expensive to ship items). When you search for anything - in the box that says Sort by: it will come up Best Match as the default search, but if you click the down arrow you'll get other choices to sort the search. Click on Distance: nearest first . It will resort your search and show the distance away from you the listing is - listed from closest to farthest showing the distance/ milage in the far right column. You can also save a search to a favorite search in that mode (by distance - or any other you prefer). If I were you and looking for a Victorian bookcase close to me here is what I would do: Go to www.ebay.com then click on Buy (TR corner) Then click Antiques Then under furniture click on Bookcases Then on the left side where it says Narrow Your Results click 1800-1899 then in the Sort by: box put in Distance: nearest first Then click (Save This Search). This way you'll only be looking at bookcase listed under 1800-1899 - not other styles/ Eras you're not interested in, sorted by and showing the distance it is from you so you don't have to consider shipping. If there is nothing listed right now, when you save the search they will e-mail you whenever new items are listed that fit your search criteria, it only takes a minute to check on new items - eventually - one you like , close by is sure to turn up if time is on your side. Ebay is enormous. Ebay makes WalMart look like a mom and pop store as far as quantity/ variety of inventory is concerned - you can find virtually anything there - specially if you can afford to wait a bit. Good luck.   woodwright
Great advice!  Sadly, I already do just what you described (been doing this for a couple years now).  I usually run a search for ~any~ antique furniture within 200 miles of me and I run a separate search for any antique bookcases across the country.  A 200-mile radius from Marinette, Wisconsin, includes Milwaukee, Madison, some hints of Chicago, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (250 miles includes all of Chicago).  The simple truth is that there is rarely anything on ebay within 200 miles of me that is worth buying.  ...there are invariably fewer than 100 items under antique furniture within 200 miles from here (and many of those are more than 200 miles on account of the Lake Michigan reality versus straight-line distance).  My 200-mile searches have netted me some nice toys though...a sideboard in Chicago and a Turkish rocking chair west of Escanaba.

I also do a 200-mile radius check from my parents' house in Florida because they drive up here at least once a year.  I keep an eye on Florida auction houses for this reason too.  They have brought me two marble-top tables and an egret stand in the last few years.  A big bookcase would be a bit of a challenge for them, but it might be possible if only I find one at a good price.

I'm thinking about attending the Martin Antique Auction in Anna, Illinois (southern Illinois) at the end of this month.  We have to be down that way for a wedding anyway...I'm just waiting to see what they post in their online catalog here in the next few days.  They usually have some really nice stuff, but I have no idea what any of it sells for.

Thank you!
