I'm not far from NY and had I had more warning, I would have liked to have gone to the show. I learned about it a few days after it was over.
wow, i was a little stunned by some of the prices. i wonder, has any single piece of victorian furniture cracked the 1 million dollar mark?
I've never seen a reference to one breaking that mark. However, I've seen a pie crust table hit $8 million. crazy.
oh yeah, early american brings some killer prices no doubt. there were 2 chippendale tea tables in last couple months made by same maker that did very well at auction, one at 6.5 mil and the other at 5.9 mil. the all time record though for an american piece of furniture was the john goddard desk/bookcase which sold in 1989 for 12.1 million. i think it might be the most expensive piece of antique furniture ever sold.
i would add that Kindel of grand rapids makes a line by line copy certified by Winterthur Museum of that desk/bookcase and it sells for 50K or so. a tidy sum for a repro.
The Newtown Bee online edition has an overview of the recent Winter Antiques Show:
54th Winter Antiques Show Strives For Perfection; Associated Artists is one of the pictured exhibitors... the $125,000 Daniel Pabst bookcase referenced in the text is the large, glass-doored case piece at right center. (I can send anyone who is interested a scan of their show program ad, which features the Pabst cabinet.)

Remember those brass Aesthetic andirons from that article ($285k)? Two done in cast iron are coming up for sale tomorrow. Expected $20-$30k.
