Last weekend was out antique shopping with my husband.  Before we went home, he wanted to stop at the local Goodwill.  I found this sofa for $80.00 and brought it home.  It definitely was not taken well care of and we are planning on reupholstering and restoring in a few years (after the kids are gone) and my question is is the top part restorable (looks like the crest in the middle of the sofa was broken off).  This is a very heavy piece of furniture and measures 6 1/2 feet long by 3 feet wide.  Any ideas on time period (is this an original or some sort of mid-century reproduction?  Looks to have been reupholstered in the 50's or 60's (judging by the fabric chosen)  Also any suggestions on what style/color upholstery when that time comes (what would you choose)  I'm thinking a cream colored floral damask type fabric but am open to any suggestions.  Also any guesstimates of what reupholstering and restoration might end up costing?

Well . . . the sofa appears to me to be a product of the 1920s.  The broken crest at the top looks like it ought to be a fairly easy fix for a good furniture restorer.  As for fabrics, you have lots of options.  Some of the really art deco pieces from the 20s and 30s look pretty awesome in mohair, but a traditional damask would probably be more fitting with the "traditional" style of this sofa.

I agree.  This is most defintely a piece from the 1920's.  I think it would look smashing in a mohair.  That would be very fitting for the period and style.  A deep red or an aubergine...

It's a nice piece.
Thanks for your replies & opinions.  It will be awhile before we get it redone but for the price we paid I figured we could do it right when the time comes.
Beautiful sofa! i find this style works well in victorian or art deco suroundings. I found a similar sofa that was a quality peice with down coushins and even after a quality reupholstery its still cost much less than a new sofa and garners many comments from guests.
