I couldn't pass up the gilt & ebonized details on this little table. I'm wondering if those details might be attributable to a particular maker...they kind of remind me of a Brunswick pool table (for no particularly good reason). Perhaps you pool table & furniture experts may have seen a similar table in the back of a catalog somewhere, somewhen . . . ?

It is reminiscent of some of the Kilian pieces, but can't be for sure it's by them. As an aside, I think Mosby misidentified it as Aesthetic. I would think it would date pre-Aesthetic, more in the Ren Revival era.
Very good to know! Thank you.
This purchase was hard to "justify". My wife & I played chess once when we were dating. She knows how to move the pieces...I like to play a fianchetto defense. We have several other unused chess boards around the house in closets. Regardless, the table is really "cute" and I suspect that it can hold coasters and sodas just as well as it can game pieces.
Our 2nd son was born on May 16 (a week ago yesterday). Perhaps he and his 3-yr-old brother will take to chess (or checkers) some day.

As our 3-year-old would say, it does look a "tiny one bit" like this cantebury that the Flomaton folks sold...
"Circa 1880 Aesthetic Victorian canterbury / music stand, solid walnut, probably Kilian Bros, NYC, inlaid top, great original gilt incised carving, ebonized trim, cast brasstips on finials, great original finish, 20" long, 14" wide, 33" tall. "
