Stored in a boiler room for 40 years, a pair of American Aesthetic Movement chairs with missing panels and parts sold for $390,400 (hammer price of $320,000 + 22% buyer premium) on December 5 at Rago Auctions in Lambertville, NJ.

Wow, I was not aware of Tiffany doing work like this.  Thanks for sharing.
If you go on Rago's site you can see better pics.

oldchina, could you post a link, please? I looked all over Ragoarts, and could only find the one photo on the listing page.

Thanks much~
Cheryl
Pretty cool chairs - Amazing price!! All it takes is 2 collectores w/ deep pockets that really want something.
This was all I found on Rogo's site (small pics w/ a description): http://www.ragoarts.com/lot/65727 The funny part is look at the estimate - it says $500 - $700. That should tell you what an auction estimate is is worth.   woodwright
Sorry, Cheryl, for not getting back to you. Flu.  But I see pics are posted now and all is well.  I happened to be at the sale.  Everyone raced back to see what the excitement was about because the chairs after the hammer came down.  I took photos with my cell, but the photos posted are better. - Susan
Greetings and Merry Christmas!

My two cents? This is alot of coin for these chairs.
They remind me of the work I saw when visiting Chicago---
specifically the Chicago library. It has a fabulous interior
designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. I am enclosing
several pics. Definitely worth the visit if you ever
get to this area.

Four more chairs with carved peacocks and glass inlay surface; they were sold in 2001 for less than $3000.

uh oh, more throne chairs attributed to Tiffany huh, this cant be good news for the buyer at the Rago sale.

on the horizon!

I'm not sure the buyer of the Rago pair will be upset at all.  Perhaps they will want to complete the set and have the finances to do so.  Alternatively, the other two people who were bidding can have a pair as well.  Besides, there are only 6 peacock chairs... It isn't like someone stumbled across a warehouse full of them.  ;)
