Thanks for sharing this great story ---I have been in those shops in Bell Buckle, Tenn. within the last year and may have just walked right on by that box......Charles.
Charles, yup, ditto here, i would be just as likely to walk right on by that pipe box. John T Kirk has a recent book out (2000), "American Furniture" where there is a chapter titled "The Value of a Trained Eye" where he gives several examples of people who should know, walk right on by. For those unfamilar with Mr. Kirk, he is a retired professor of art history at Boston Univ who inadvertently became the founding father of the original finish fetish in america when he published a book in the '70s with a chapter titled " Buy It Ratty and Leave It Alone".
