Yep, and I'm getting a blog post or 4 related to this sale queued up ...
Anyone out there familiar with shipping? I'm interested in bidding on a sofa at Neal's.I have never used a shipping company What price range would I be looking at from New Orleans to Cincinnati? Thanks for the help.
jcapal, They have several nice sofas - I like the Jelliff sofas. I've used www.freightquote.com a few times to ship large items w/ good results - never had a problem or damage. (I just shipped a 4'x10' sign weighed 250 lbs. crated last week from NY to Texas - cost was $270.00 total w/$1,250 insurance. I've shipped an antique barber chair to Colorado & 2 pairs of very large Gothic Doors to NC - buyer arranged and paid shipping for both of these, but I think it was in the $250.00 range both times). They get competitive bids from multiple shippers - then give you the best price. But I've always crated everything up myself. They are just picked up by common carrier. I doubt Neal would do the crating, and the carriers I'm sure wouldn't. I don't think I would want to ship a nice valuable/ fragile piece of furniture just blanket wrapped w/o crating it - way too easy to damage it. It's a different story if you're hauling it yourself, but it changes trucks along the way, and other stuff is also put on the load. I think a lot of moving/ specialty shipping companies have regular crates of assorted sizes that are reuseable. (Save the time & expense of having a custom crate made - which can take quite a few hours and a fair amount of material - it could cost hundreds just to crate it). Here's a shipper that specializes in shipping antique furniture - Antiques Transport Company - http://www.antiquetransport.com/ - I've never used them, but stumbled on them once and saved their website. I did a search for antiques shipping on google - here is the search results http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=antiques+shipping&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&num=10&lr=&as_filetype=&ft=i&as_sitesearch=&as_qdr=all&as_rights=&as_occt=any&cr=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&safe=images - Many have online shipping calculators to give you at least a ballpark idea. Good luck winning the sofa and getting it shipped. woodwright
Hi,
Here is a list of shippers I got from the "Rare Victorian" himself:
Shippers for estimates:
Nationwide Delivery (888) 827-6500; TRC Trucking (918) 660-4900, Email: [email removed]; AC Delivers: (800)-553-3269 OR (866)-506-5477 Email: [email removed]; Vintage Transport: (800)-333-0056 OR (888)-882-4442 Email: [email removed]; Craters & Freighters (610) 397-0488; Plycon Van Lines quote from website only www.plyconvanlines.com.
I have had antiques shipped from the east coast to the west coast (Washington) a couple of times and have used AC delivers both times. Their estimates were the cheapest and the items arrived safely. One of the items was a sofa. They crated it and with insurance it was close to $900. They will want to know the value to give you an estimate. When you have a firm price they will send you a quote for shipping by email. I was very happy with them both times.
Good Luck!
Connie

You can also try http://www.uship.com/ as another source where there are competitive bids.
Thank you all very much Yeah the Jelliff pieces are very nice I'm quite the fan. I really wanted to attend the auction but I'm playing the summer beach bum. I'll try my luck with a phone bid. Thanks again.
yeah, i have used uship.com for several years now. mostly small operators but its very reasonable and safe.
