Hello-

I purchased this bedroom set (less bed) almost 25 years ago.
Mahogany and walnut have long been my choice and when
I saw these pieces it did not take much of an arm twisting before
my wallet opened! The set is very finely made with nice
relief carving, interiors lined in maple and original bronze/brass
hardware. Each piece has a different face at the top center of the
mirror. Since their purchase I have seen the large dressers at least
(3) more times. I finally came across the bed a few years back but
there were two with the set and they were twin sized. My wife
and I have slept on a full size bed for all of our marriage, but
a twin bed is just too small!

Can anyone help with their manufacture? Twice, I have seen them labeled
as Horner, but feel this was in error (with the way things are
mislabeled I am surprised they have not been called Jeliff!!!!).
My dresser has a stenciled Rhode Island business, but I believe this was a jobber
label and not the manufacturer. I suppose it will not bother me if I never discover
their origin, but if someone has seen them in a catalogue I'd appreciate
your information! I am guessing they are circa 1890's??

(note- the highboy is the same piece, but not the one i own. i could not find
a convenient photo of the one which came with the set)

Here's a labeled Horner set very similar to yours.  I wouldn't be surprised if yours were to be by Horner, but absent a label or matching labeled set seen elsewhere, it is probably only a "possibly by" at the moment.  I would keep digging, however.

BTW, Horner never had a catalog, just a "guide".  He explicitly stated in this guide that he wouldn't have a comprehensive catalog due to the shifting inventory and tastes.

“Considering how great is the variety of taste and fashion in furniture at the present day, and that the styles are frequently changing, we do not deem it practical to issue a catalogue of our stock in its entirety, or anything approaching thereto.”

hello-- update....

interestingly enough the dresser bottom has now shown
up on ebay with the seller stating the
original horner tag is on the back. i have requested
a pic of the label and hope it is forthcoming but no response
yet. the item listed appears to have been refinished
and the hardware is not original to the piece. regardless,
ebay may have helped with the discovery of the manufacturer!

Congrats on finding a labeled match.  I'd imagine that over time you will come across other pieces of your set, possibly even a full bed.  BTW, here's a link to a nearly complete Horner Bombe bedroom suite with two full beds, a dresser, a ladies dresser, a bench, and a cheval mirror. I'm guessing the extra mirror they mention went to a highboy.  Horner Bedroom Suite
The Newark Museum owns a labeled Horner "chiffonier" very similar in form, particularly with the brackets for the swing mirror and the bolts on which it swings. It is on display in the Ballantine House, in Mrs. Ballantine's boudoir...didn't belong to her, though.
