Lost amidst the stoneware and George-whatever style furniture in the upcoming Brunk's sale is a lovely Aesthetic Movement side chair, Lot #0819.

Fine aesthetic movement side chair,
scrolled back with dragon carved crest with brass(?), copper(?) and mother-of-pearly inlay, skirt with similar inlay, finely turned legs, attributed to New York, 1870s or 1880s, 37-1/2 x 17 x 17-1/2 in.
Excellent condition, two minor losses to metal inlay, minor carving abrasions, upholstery in good repair, not examined under upholstery.
Estimate: $200 - $400

It appears to be identical to one at the High Museum (see Art & Enterprise: American Decorative Art, 1825-1917 The Virginia Carroll Crawford Collection, page 265, Plate 146). The High catalog does not make any attribution beyond "Probably New York," but they do note that it is comparable to work executed for the William H. Vanderbilt House by Herter Brothers (these chairs, in particular), and that the mixed-media marquetry is similar to that of known pieces by Herts Brothers.

IMO the estimate of $200-400 for a chair of that quality is low, even taking into account the very minor condition issues.
Nice find, Mlb, so put it on the home page.
Well, i attended the first day of this sale yesterday online as i had bids on a couple of pieces. Although Brunk sells a dab of everything what they specialize in is southern/mid atlantic furniture and yesterday was no exception as they had some fine and important southern pieces (yeah, i lost on everything).

Today, MLB chair goes on the block and i'll be interested to see how it does but i wont be surprised if it sells for many times it's estimate.
ok, the chair went for $3450. with BP included, sort of what i expected.
