The three photos attached are of a bed we owned from 1983 to 1988. It was faintly stenciled (wore off after we had it for a while) upside-down on the inside of the right rail toward the headboard: ?J. Koppelman? (in a semi-circle over the words) ?Rooms Bergen Street.? I assume Bergen Street means somewhere in New Jersey, but I could be wrong. It would be interesting to know if Herr Koppelman was the maker or the retailer of this bed.

We bought it in Kansas City, MO in 1983 and sold it in Columbus, OH in 1988. We wish to this day that we had never sold it and have wanted to find and re-purchase it.

The bed is Queen size (or very close to it). The pediment in the photos is a later addition; I suspect the original pediment looked like the carvings on the top of the standards and was massively tall. The bed with its substitute pediment looked like an elephant wearing a beanie. Nonetheless, we loved it, and in its truncated form, it barely cleared an 8? ceiling.

I remember that my wife was nearing the end of her pregnancy with our first child when we bought the bed. I slept on the floor in front of the bed because she was so miserable.
It was like sleeping in front of a 1956 Cadillac that might roll over you at any minute!

The footboard is 1 ? to 2 inches thick on the curved portions (thicker at the center) and has a huge Brooks-style gear on an axle swimming in a pond of burl. There are two pierced wood pieces that fit in the 90 degree angle created by the rails and the upright standards that hold the headboard in place. (Lying in bed, we discovered that we could look out through the irregular Rococo hole in the wood pieces.)

There is an eight or ten pointed star/circle in the top center of the headboard, flanked by two triangular pieces of trim over two huge pieces of burl. The standards that hold up the headboard are topped with sort of gothic-looking constructs that resemble trees. There is some great strap work carving under the ?trees.? The whole bed has a Gothic meets Renaissance look with some Rococo details.

The photos are scans of old Polaroids (Hey, it was the ?80?s!) which I reworked in Photoshop for a long time. It was trying to make a silk purse from a sow?s ear, so the photos are not too great, but hopefully you can see what the bed looks like.

Well, have any of you heard of Herr Koppelman? Have you seen a bed like this one?OR ?this bed? Tell me what you think and share you opinions and knowledge with me!
Thanks!

Hi!
It occurred to me that Koppelman could be spelled Koppleman. It has been a long time since I have seen this bed.  The reason I placed these posts in the Attribution Stretch Category was that I thought it might be helpful to anyone trying to research an unmarked piece with similar characteristics. If this needs to be moved, that?s fine!
Thanks!
Hi!
I have discovered that there is a Bergen Street in Newark, NJ as well as in Brooklyn, NY. There are some Brooklyn city directories online from the Victorian period (no J. Koppelman or Koppleman listed in them), but I have have only found 1840's city directories online (so far) for Newark.
Thanks,
It is probably just a coincidence, but the 1870 US Census for Baltimore, MD shows a "John Koppleman, aged 53. Retail Furniture Dealer".
Hi!
Thank you! This is very interesting. It all fits as far as time frame. Is there a Bergen Street in Baltimore? If, not this bed could represent an earlier business of his in another city (Newark or Brooklyn).
Thank you VERY MUCH!!
