Hi!
This is a chair we bought nine years ago. It is in original finish, but has been reupholstered. I saw one like in Columbus, OH in the early 90's that had a musical instrument on the pediment/crest (at the big brick house antique mall on South high Street.) We found thins one in Oklahoma in the late 90's. Do you think it is M. and H. Schrenkeisen? Stangely enough, there is an eteched Roman numeral two (II) or an "H" etched in the wood that I never saw until I shot the photos tonight and blew them up in Photoshop. Maybe the "H" throws out the M. and H. Schrenkeisen theory . . .what do you think? If it is a Roman numeral II, then it could mean tht this is the second chair in a suite . . .maybe?
Gentleman's Chair by M. and H. Schrenkeisen? Or someone with an "H" name?

Here is a close up of the "H" or II--maybe someone named Henry put an H on it to say I want this chair and I claim it.
Drew49, can you take a photograph of the "ear" detail on the upper corners of the chair back? This chair surprisingly resembles a Schrenkeisen model No 28.
Hi!
I will shoot that photo tonight and post it.
Thanks!

As you can see from the image, we have close overall match but there are a few variations in the crest area and corners of the skirt near the legs. I wouldn't be surprised if your chair is indeed a Schrenkeisen, just not a model that I have in the particular year of catalog I have.
The "H" or "II" is probably an coincidence and not related to the name. If I were a cabinetmaker, I wouldn't use only one of my initials, especially since were talking multiple people here. One would feel left out.
I would definitely attribute your chair to Schrenkeisen, but not go further than that without more research.

Wow! Thanks! What time period would you guess to be when it was manufactured?
Also, is there any data that would suggest a value? We paid under $300.

ca. 1870. My catalog copies are 1872. Your valuation is fine.
Thanks! It is nice to somehow find that connection with the past and a specific maker. I appreciate your input and help.
