I think the fabric distracts one from looking at the details, but it appears to be a well-carved sofa - not on par with Meeks and Belter, but pierce-carved better than most. Reupholstered it could be quite nice. Price is too steep.
My wife and I bought an Aesthetic table from Stantonsburg Antiques and were very pleased. Seems like some of their things are priced really well and others are a bit high. You may want to give them a call and negotiate.
It could be a very sharp looking sofa with the right fabric and a quality upholstery job (which would of course include buttoning the back). The present fabric and buttonless back only take away from it's overall appearance. George Henkels was known for his pierce carved parlor chairs & sofa's, but I am not familiar enough w/ his work to attribute this to him or not, but would say it is done in the manner of George Henkels.
It looks like there have been some breaks and reglueing to some of the carving & a piece of the carving is misssing from the crest to the left of the center. The pictures don't show it very well, but the finish looks worn or muddy and looks like it could use a refinishing to bring it to it's potential (best done when the upholstery is stripped, before reupholstering). Anyone who buys this should also factor in the cost of the restoration work that should be done to make this sofa look like it was intended and bring it to it's full potential. It's definitely not bargain priced considering the work needed - but a nice sofa none the less.
